Doug Lowy receives Distinguished Scientist Award from the Association of American Cancer Institutes
Doug Lowy, M.D., Acting Director of NCI and Chief of the Laboratory of Cellular Oncology, has been selected to receive the Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI) Distinguished Scientist Award. AACI is recognizing Dr. Lowy for his long-term research on the molecular biology of tumor viruses and growth regulation, his role in enabling the development of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines and his exploration of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes and their signaling pathways.

John Brognard, Ph.D., Investigator in the Laboratory of Cell and Developmental Signaling, Romina Goldszmid, Ph.D., Investigator in the Cancer and Inflammation Program, and Anish Thomas, M.D., Investigator in the Developmental Therapeutics Branch, are recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). The PECASE is the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government to outstanding scientists and engineers who are beginning their independent research careers and who show exceptional promise for leadership in science and technology. Established in 1996, the PECASE acknowledges the contributions scientists and engineers have made to the advancement of science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and to community service as demonstrated by scientific leadership, public education and community outreach.

Congratulations to Vid Leko M.D., Lekha Mikkilineni, M.D., and Chen Zhao, M.D., for receiving the Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO Young Investigator Award (YIA). The YIA provides funding to promising investigators to encourage and promote quality research in clinical oncology. The purpose of this grant is to fund physicians during the transition from a fellowship program to a faculty appointment.

Buxbaum, M.D., Assistant Clinical Investigator in the Experimental Transplantation and Immunology Branch, was named the overall winner of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine’s Magnetic Moments Competition. The competition is designed for investigators to use video to describe their MRI-related research for a general audience. Dr. Buxbaum’s video describes her research using tracers to better and more safely image tumors.

Julius Strauss, M.D., Assistant Research Physician in the Laboratory of Tumor Immunology and Biology, discussed a promising immunotherapy drug for patients with HPV-related cancers in a recent NCI Cancer Currents blog post. According to results from a phase 1 clinical trial, 33 percent of the 36 patients on the trial with HPV-positive tumors responded to the drug, and four of the responses lasted longer than 18 months. “This drug is a promising agent for patients with HPV-related cancers and may potentially benefit these patients more than traditional checkpoint therapies,” said Dr. Strauss.

Ryan, Ph.D., M.P.H., Investigator in the Laboratory of Human Carcinogenesis, as well as Worta McCaskill-Stevens, M.D., M.S., from the Division of Cancer Prevention, and Christina Dieli-Conwright, Ph.D., M.P.H., from the University of Southern California. They discussed cancer disparities and the work being done to help reduce them.
